Redbox Games Will Save You Money–Do the Math
As of Fri, the semi-omnipresent red boxes of Redbox offer computer game rentals in addition to Blu-ray and standard DVD movies. Each of the 21,000 Redbox kiosks that has games will stockpile between 22 and 28 game titles, and provide avid gamers a casual to save some cash.
Renting a game from Redbox costs more renting a movie. A criterional DVD costs $1 per day, a Blu-beam movie is $1.50 per day, and video games are $2 per mean solar day. That doesn't appear like much of a deal.
I have had Madden 11 since it launched back in August. I paid $50 for the game, but had I rented it every of this time I would represent going on $600. I think Madden football is the primary reason for owning any gambling system–but I don't like it $600 worth.
Even so, Madden 11–or at least my screw of Madden 11–is not a healthful measure of the value of Redbox game rentals. Game prices vary past deed, and gambling system, but just about premium titles tend to be $50 or $60. At $2 per day, the jailbreak-even on most premium gage titles is near a month which is much longer than many games see whatsoever carry out.
Buying any mettlesome is a chance. You butt practice reviews and recommendations to make more intelligent purchasing decisions, but ultimately, you might expend $60 and hate the game, or you power expend $60 and love the game so much that you basically all-or-none information technology in a weekend. Either way, you are basically unsuccessful the $60.
You john't return an agape game, but you can read titles you Don River't equivalent, or that you are just through with and trade them in at GameStop, Amazon, or other lame retailers to reimburse some of your losses. But, a $60 game often sells pre-owned for about half of that, which means the store is purchasing it from users for eventide fewer. Assume your trade-in value is someplace around a third of the price of the deed of conveyance–at best.
That means you're parting with $40 for the privilege of acting the spirited. That is 20 years in Redbox time–almost three weeks. That is plenty of time to either consummate a game if IT's awesome, or return a game if it sucks, and go on.
With only cardinal-something slots to share betwixt multiple game consoles, Redbox titles will be limited. But, for the titles that are uncommitted from Redbox, renting the halting at $2 per day is a way better investment, and importantly less of a gamble, than purchasing it for $60.
If you love the game, or it turns out to be one of those games you will want to play indefinitely in online multi-player way (similar Call of Duty, operating room Halo Reach), you can always go pick aweigh a pre-owned copy for about half off from some sucker who didn't exercise Redbox.
